Prop 19 California Election Results

California Prop 19

Finally, 100% of the California Proposition 19 election results are in. All 24,845 precincts have reported. Of the over 7.5 million votes recorded, 53.9% voted against Prop 19, and the legalization of marijuana in the state of California.

If Prop 19 were to be approved, the state would have legalized marijuana and been allowed regulate and tax the nationally prohibited drug. Supporters of the proposition suggested that legalization would help the state, which currently is having an extremely difficult time with finances, raise the much needed additional funds.

Those that were against the proposition tended to feel that the drug should not be allowed to be used in the same way ordinary cigarettes are smoked.

The majority of California’s counties voted against Proposition 19, with the exception of 10 counties on the states western coast, and two counties on the states eastern border. The counties that voted in support of legalizing marijuana were: Sonoma, Marin, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Alpine, and Mono. All the other counties voted “no” on Prop 19.

Cali, lead, follow or get the hell out of the way!!!!! I truly am disappointed in what has transpired. Here in Canada, we had some serious decrim/legalization debates about 10 years ago and the fcuking US drug czars kept insinuating that free trade would be held up at the border.
I wish the US was isolated — like waaaaay over there in Anartica. Then no one would feel the effects of its fcuking policies.
Cali voters really let the whole WORLD down. They could have CHANGED the world in one fell swoop.

Oh well, I gather Oregon, Colorado or maybe Connecticut might show Cali citizens how to legalize pot by 2012. Cali, a progressive state?? Puhlezze!!!

To be honest, Max, I was lost for words last night, when I saw the result – I really thought it was going to pass. I’m a Brit, and Prop 19 wasn’t just important for California and the US, but for the rest of the repressed world as well, particularly here, where even medicinal users are not allowed to possess or use the herb.
And we are so close to mainland Europe, where several countries have intelligent and humane politicians, who have taken a sensible approach to people’s human rights.
Still, I am encouraged by your info about the other states who are looking at legalisation. Maybe the federal govt will come to their senses before then and legalise it anyway.

I betcha Oregon or Washington state will legalize it before Cali. The people in the Pacific Northwest are very progressive & green. Cali is filled with a lot of Hollywood pretentiousness. :-) Where were all the movie stars who toke to put their money in some educational ads??

It’s true, America is one big divided society — on many levels. Their leaders routinely claim it to be the (laughs!) BEST country on earth. Riiight, with the biggest prison society on the planet. Ohhhkay.

How the fcuk can one explain George Bush Jr. getting elected (for 8 years!?!!) and now, all of a sudden, Tea Baggers are pissed off at Obama (a Harvard & Yale scholar) over what Bush and his thugs created??
Then again, Americans did vote for “spend-all-you-can-on-the-fcuking-Military” Reagan. No logic is allowed to surface in that country. :-)
It’s too bad we’re neighbours…would’ve love the Scandanavians, Germans or the Dutch hanging out next door. :-) It sucks to be us & Mexico. :-)

Oh, have a peek at this: “Youth vote falters; Prop. 19 falls short”

Looks like the naive/CONFUSED “who’s-Britney-and-Paris-fcuking” youths forgot what time it is. Ugh!

Thanks for the link – very interesting. Young stoners, don’t you just love them. I pictured the scene:
“Hey, let’s go and vote for Prop19, man!”
“Yeah, when I’ve made another doobie, dude”.
3 hours later: “C’mon, man, let’s go do it!”
” Nah, dude, I’m too wrecked. Besides, every toker’s gonna be up there voting for it – we don’t need to”
    Imagine this scene x 200,000….

I think it may have been different if it had been a stand-alone vote, rather than bundled in with the mid-terms. Older (likely more conservative too) voters turn out religiously, and they would have tended to vote “no”. I think more focus could have been put on prop 19 if it had been a stand-alone, and that the older electors would have been less likely to turn out for it. Just my thoughts, though.

I agree entirely with your comments about the good ol’ usa: I was discussing recently with my brother how far ahead of other countries they are in the league of who has caused the most deaths, suffering and general misery throughout the world. All in the cause of freedom and democracy, of course.

I noticed an E African reference in your profile. If this includes Kenya, you may be interested in an article that my brother (the same one) sent me, just after I replied to your first comment. It is about Churchill, and what a cu*t he really was. I never knew the bit about his bust in the White House. Good for B.O, I say. Now, I don’t seem to be able to post links with Disqus, so search for “Not his finest hour: The dark side of Winston Churchill”. This appeared in the UK Independent on 28 Oct, and gives a very different picture of this “great man”.

Keep up the good fight – we will win.

    Phil

Ah, thanks for the Churchill heads up. Yep, I’ve been “passing through” East Africa for the past 5 years…taking a break from the West. :-)
The ONLY thing I miss (big time!!) is clubbing in Toronto and Montreal where I frequently attend big Electronic Dance Music events — listening to the underground Tribal/Progressive/Funky House sounds of remarkable DJs from around the world who know how to keep the vibe going. :-(
Thank goodness for YouTube, SoundCloud and MegaUpload. :-)

No doubt the fight will eventually be won in the end. But at what CO$T? All that “enforcement” money could be put to good use in these difficult times.
