Raymond Chase Suicide

19 Year old Raymond Chase Commits Suicide

What’s with all the young gay males committing suicide in the last few weeks? Is it that support systems at colleges in America are breaking down or is it all just a coincidence? It is being reported that Wednesday, September 29th, 19 year old Raymond Chase committed suicide via a hanging in his dorm room. The Sophomore at Johnson & Wales seemed happy, but clearly there was more going on inside than he showed outside.

Yesterday, the Vice President of Johnson & Wales, Ronald Martel emailed all students the following message, “Today I contact you with the deeply sad news of the passing of Raymond Chase, sophomore, 19, culinary arts major. The campus community is mourning the loss of this vibrant young man who leaves many JWU friends and teachers, and a loving family of Monticello, New York. Funeral arrangements are not available at this time. As we obtain more information that can be shared, we will do so. Ray’s JWU friends and the university are planning a memorial service for the campus community. Those details will be forthcoming”.

Johnson & Wales University is fairly large with over 16,000 enrolled students. it is located in Providence Rhode Island, and was founded in 1914 as a business school. Today the university has programs for business, culinary, equine management, hospitality, education, and technology.

Does something need to be done in America to set up support groups for not only young homosexual men, but for those youngsters looking for people to talk to, someone to air their daily frustrations about life to? Our hearts go out to the family of Raymond Chase, as well as the other 4 young men who took their own lives in the month of September.

I never had the chance to meet Raymond Chase, but based on my experience interacting with gays and following the news as it unfolds in the area of human rights, it is my opinion that homosexuals are going to need a lot more than just support groups to help them through these chaotic times. They are an oppressed minority in this country; today’s voters can’t agree on whether or not they should be allowed to marry one another, as if anyone besides the couple in question has the right to decide. Homosexual children are raised in many households to believe that they are destined to go to Hell no matter what choices they make in life, just because of who they are. In September, the vote to repeal the DADT military policy failed by 4 votes, indicating that a lot of voters and representatives care nothing for the emotional health and personal freedom of those who have pledged their willingness to suffer and die to protect everyone in this country. Homosexuals are being robbed of everything that makes their lives their own, so it comes as no surprise to me that many such young people are sinking into the pits of despair. As a heterosexual person myself, I had always taken automatic acceptance from my peers and culture throughout young adulthood for granted until I found out that some people are denied the same dignity and it makes me sick. After all this time, human rights are still being selectively distributed as a luxury to the powerful and ignorant majority based on the fear of change. I believe that our society has no choice but to change because we’ve already outgrown this pointless shell of emotional and sexual repression. Until it is cast aside for good, innocent and loving people will continue to agonize over internal conflicts created by hateful attitudes and policies in the outside world.

It is actually the 9th suicide in the past three weeks. We all need to do more to help these kids. Please get involved with The Trevor Project to prevent suicide among kids who are being bullied because of their sexual identity. /www.thetrevorproject.org/
